I believe in being careful what you listen to. Just like negativity and positivity, the music you listen to can affect you mind as well. Being a composer means that I have to listen to the things that push my mental thinking or musicianship and help me evolve, instead of trying to stay with the trends.
I am my biggest competition. It's not up to me to stand and think that in order to get head in music, I have to mimic every popular musical act. There are so many independent artists that don't get the respect they deserve while people who have a platform and do the minimum call themselves "artists".
Every song, whether you like it or not, has something that can be used to grow someone musically. You can always take from all musical genres what inspires you or the tolls that you love and create something passionate. You can even take an idea in a different direction and create new results.
